Supporting children with books
At Vancouver Clinic, all of our providers believe in the nurturing power of story time. So much so, that we make sure every Vancouver Clinic patient between the ages of 6 months and 5 years receives a free book during each well-child visit. Parents receive information on reading aloud as well.
Studies show that reading together:
- Helps parents and kids connect emotionally and physically
- Promotes healthy brain development
- Creates a foundation for success in school.
Through our Reach Out and Read program, we help families build a small home library. Many of our patients lack age-appropriate books in the home, and many parents haven’t heard about the positive impacts of reading. Even among families who already read together, new books help make reading exciting and encourage a story habit.
Our nonprofit program puts 9,000-plus books into the littlest hands in our community each year—and it’s making a tremendous impact. Parents served by Reach Out and Read are more than twice as likely to read to their children and have books in the home.
