Ryota (Yoda) Shimada, MD, PhD
Internal Medicine Resident
Dr. Yoda Shimada is a fourth-generation physician. He values the opportunity to support people when they are at their most vulnerable. He provides care tailored to individual situations, needs, and goals.
Dr. Shimada is particularly interested in critical care medicine—caring for those who are hospitalized due to a critical illness or injury. He is passionate about medical education and has taught and mentored junior medical students. He is fluent in Japanese.
Dr. Shimada earned a bachelor of science in bioengineering at the University of California, San Diego, in San Diego, California. He earned a doctor of medicine and a doctor of philosophy in biomedical sciences at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His PhD thesis focused on genomics, infectious disease and virology, and bioinformatics.
Away from medicine, Dr. Shimada enjoys doing art projects with his young daughter. In high school, he earned a perfect score on the National Latin Exam and was recognized by the New Mexico State Legislature.
