Experience & Training

Dr. David Simons earned a doctorate in neuroscience from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas in 2011, and a medical degree from the same school in 2012. He also holds a bachelor of arts in physics from Taylor University in Upland, Indiana. Dr. Simons completed his residency in ophthalmology at the Casey Eye Institute in Portland. He also completed a fellowship in glaucoma at the same institute.

On a personal note…

Dr. Simons knows first-hand how precious vision is. When he was young, a close family member went blind. He has since dedicated his career to helping prevent and treat vision loss. As an ophthalmologist, he believes there is nothing more rewarding than sharing in a patient’s joy after cataract surgery, when they can see clearly again.

For Dr. Simons, caring for patients begins with listening. Understanding their fears, concerns, and expectations allows him to provide individualized care. Patient education is foundational to his approach. He believes that when people understand their disease, they are able to make informed decisions about their care.

Dr. Simons has a special interest in minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, cataract surgery, and the treatment of diabetic retinopathy. He invented two eye-related medical devices, both of which were patented through Oregon Health & Science University.

In his free time, Dr. Simons enjoys spending time with his wife and children, playing soccer, and staying involved with glaucoma research at the Casey Eye Institute.
